Assignment #4: Media Relations (or Googl'ations)

Google is very relevant in today's media; they possess a technological presence similar to Apple and Microsoft respectively (even though they do not produce computer hardware/software yet). However, Google is still corporate and therefore needs certain elements of media relations to spread their business and influence (ugh, the Skynet feeling came back from my first post).

Recently Google has been launching advertising campaigns for a few of their products, such as Google Chrome, Google Music, and Google TV (really?).

Google also teamed up with Fox News to broadcast the Republican Debate in October.

An alliance forged in steel...and politics.

This move was possibly to showcase Google's use of algorithms and observation to fuel search results and accurate, real-time coverage of the debate. I saw it as a marketing strategy as the primary demographic of viewers would be Republican. In fact I would not be surprised if Google were a partner in the coverage of the Presidential primaries.

As far as I see it, the media relations do not need improvement as of late. Google has carried their brand look over to their ventures outside the internet realm. God only knows what collaboration they are cooking up next.

  1. Some good points, but I am at a loss to know why Google's viewers would be specifically Republican. I think they'd be nonplussed to know that you've knocked Democrats out of their market.

  2. What about the average (that could be seen as an insult I guess) employee at Google? Do they have a voice and if so can they express it on an officially sanctioned Google blog or tweet or even Google+ page?

Google is a juggernaut, that's for sure, but their venture into operating systems (chrome/android) with their purchase of Motorola Mobility (maker of phones but more importantly holder of valuable patents) has to be putting stress on the company - not to mention a CEO that could roll up to your desk in telepresence form. Seems like a forward thinking corporation like Google would have a rich social media environment for its employees. I mean if IBM does it really is odd that Google does not. It's to their own folly I guess.

  3. I just saw a commercial for Google+ and I immediately thought of your blog...
